Just noticed this on news.com.au

“TRISTRAM Cary, the composer of the Dr Who theme tune and a pioneer of electronic music, has died in Adelaide aged 82.

He died last week at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.”

As a Dr Who - aphile I have many fond childhood memories of the haunting theme music of this (originally) kitsch and brilliant sci-fi series from BBC. I’ve also enjoyed the light entertainment provided by the new series.

Hi there,

Just wanted to clear this up! I’m afraid Tristram didn’t compose or have any involvement in the writing or making of the Dr.Who theme tune. He was employed to do it originally but due to management changes he didn’t. He did some incidental music for Dr.Who later on (in the first daleks episode for example) but the theme tune was written by Ron Grainer and realised by Delia Derbyshire…..
