Earth Hour of Power
28 03 2008I have been sceptical of the fad of climate change, however, we decided that there was no harm last year in switching off our lights for “Earth Hour”. The funny thing was, when we did we walked outside and could not identify another single participant in our suburb. One journalist suggests that the impact of turning your lights off for an hour is an indistinguishable drop in energy use?
Another article from the perspective of an Anglican congregation that has adopted a environmentally friendly policy suggests that the concept of stewardship of the Earth is a new concept only developed in the last 3- 5 years! Doh! What? See Leviticus 25:1-6. Nothing new here.
I think the wisdom proffered in Proverbs 12:10-11 is applicable. The righteous will always be considerate towards their livestock and will be conscientious in the management of their land and resources. Turning off lights might be a fun way to celebrate this effort but it won’t save the planet or the inhabitants, that’s Christ’s job
(Romans 8:19-23)

God gave humans brains and the ability to know right from wrong. It is up to humans to use their brains and do the right, responsible thing. It is too easy to say it is God’s job. That is a cop-out in my books. I think it is awesome that people from all over the world got together at the same time to make a point and cause an effect. Who knows what we can do next time.
SD - I’m not trying to cop out with a cliche’. It IS Christ’s mission to save us
My argument is that the resultant “effect” of this particular effort is insufficient to make a positive impact on the state of our environment. There are too many other variables affecting global climate change that a few light bulbs won’t change. Ultimately this is yet another diversion for people to follow after instead of responding in obedience to Christ. As long as they are distracted by the condition of the environment they are not going to understand the eternal plight of their own soul - that is a far greater cause to be involved with.
I just got an impassioned eco message on the glories of clothes-lines. It started me thinking about what will happen to the status of women if all of these “green” policies take hold: no washers, driers, vacuums, etc. And all without AC, right?

PS: How much carbon was ADDED by all of the extra whining and panting of the greenies during earth hour?
Yep! - good point - if the GW crowd were consistent in their “doctrine” they’d be advocating a return to pre 20th century lifestyle, roles & responsibilities for all.
