Burn Out or Rust Out?

Only The Good Die Young

John Ilhan the owner of the Crazy John’s mobile phone company has died, allegedly from a heart attack, at the age of 42.

He was a committed Muslim and  exemplified the quality of character that westerners typically associate with a traditional philanthropist and Judeo-Christian world view. Nonetheless, his strong work ethic, family values and generosity did not offset the unpredictable timing of his passing.

Certainly his family is in need of support, comfort  and sympathy during this time. How much more they are in need of a genuine consolation and hope that is only found through Christ.

Dumbledore Outed!

22 10 2007

Rowling has revealed that the Dumbledore character from her ‘Harry Potter’ series is a homosexual. My immediate suspicion and skeptical response was that this was a marketing stunt.

I advocate a broad cannon of reading and support the inclusion of fiction that does not conform, confirm, ratify or defend my own world view. I do not agree with or support the opinion that ‘Harry Potter’ should be avoided, banned and excluded from children’s libraries. Fantasy literature plays an important role in developing imagination and creativity - aspects in which we have an opportunity to demonstrate our capacity for re-creation after the creators image. (i.e. we will never “create” something out of nothing but we can re-create, redesign, mold, build, invent etc).

Although the last novel, ‘Deathly Hallows’ deals with details of Dumbledore’s past in so far as it contributes to the ‘Harry Potter’ mythology, no defense or judgement is made against his personal preferences in the area of sexuality. Enough has been written on the bildungsroman qualities of the ‘Potter’ series so it is not worth revisiting.

I’ve Been “Rolled”

15 10 2007

OK, so I’m listed in the Pyromaniacs Blogroll - after several years of silently following and reading Phil’s blogs, stealing his “bookmarks” and lurking at Dan & Frank’s sites my blog is listed on a site that actually has a readership! The problem/challenge this presents is that I’ll be motivated/convicted/guilt-ridden if I don’t keep my site up to date a little more regularly than once every 2 months! After all what’s the point in having a web log if I don’t log log anything.

So, here’s goes… I’ll try at first for a minimum of once a week and see if I can keep that up for a while. Hopefully something intelligible will fall out along the way and I’ll get some interaction going with new readers. Lets see!
